  • Do I Need a Driver's License Number to File a Return?

You DO NOT need a driver's license number to file a federal return.

In an effort to better protect you from identity thieves, some states will be trying new approaches.  Some states may request your driver's license number for state tax returns because they have the ability to match state records and help confirm your identity.  This is one more layer of protection against identity thieves who may already have your name and Social Security number, but perhaps not your driver's license number.

The state of Alabama is requiring driver's license information this year for the state tax return.  You will be required to provide the driver's license number, issue date, and expiration date or a valid state ID.  If you do not have a driver's license or state ID, you will be required to paper file and mail in your state tax return.

In order to find out if the state where you live requires driver's license information visit state revenue department websites.
